The two contracts are valued at around US$204mn, said Alstom.
Alstom senior vice-president for Middle East and Africa Gian-Luca Erbacci said, “We are pleased that NAT has entrusted Alstom with these new contracts. These new projects will undoubtedly strengthen our partnership with NAT that started more than 30 years ago. We are committed to accompany our customer in the further development of Cairo’s metro network to meet the growing demand for mobility.”
The company is expected to provide Urbalis, its signalling solution as well as Iconis, the operating control centre. In addition, Alstom will provide point machines, station signalling equipment – which will enable smooth journeys and short headways between trains. Electromechanical equipment including power substations to feed the third rail, in addition to ventilation systems and elevators/escalators will also be given by Alstom.
The Cairo Metro railway line is 78 kilometres long with two complete lines as of now. The third line is partially open as a result of ongoing construction. Line 3 of the Cairo Metro will be completed in early 2022. Fifteen stations, and track spanning a length of 17.7 kilometres will be added. Once this extension is completed, Line 3 can ferry 1.5mn passengers daily.
Overall, the Cairo Metro carries three million passengers everyday and the number is expected to reach five million by 2020.
